Labyrinth Print Development

Drawing complicated mazes was one of the starting points for this project, and I’ve always loved making repeat print patterns and decided to combine the two to make a seamlessly repeating pattern of one of my mazes to be used for backgrounds and for digitally printed fabric.

I began with drawing a tile and filling that space with my mazes, paying special attention to the connection points. I then imported the drawing into Illustrator and created this repeating pattern— it wasn’t until the tile was in repeat that I could see the gaps and spacing between lines, and while this version felt close to what I wanted making it into the full repeat helped me figure out what I did want it to look like.

Based on the changes I wanted to make from the first draft, I redrew the tile as a rectangle, and kept lines more equally spaced with the feeling of being almost stacked on top of each other. Upon bringing the pattern into illustrator and seeing it in repeat I was MUCH happier with the result, and began playing around with colorways to decide upon which version to print digitally.

I ultimately decided to use the print on the left (with dark lines on a light background) to be printed on organza to be used as a veil, and used the print on the right with a green background for printing the fabric of the accompanying gown, and will use some of the “reject” colorways for backgrounds in my digital presentation.
