Patchwork Bedding Set

90” x 90” Jan. 2021

Using the patchwork style I developed in my first quilt (Self Portrait) and the ridiculous amount of black fabric scraps I have, I’ve been restyling my bedroom to reflect my own unique style while also recycling my fabric waste.

I started by making new pillow shams; combining felt, cotton, sateen, stretch fabrics, and leather pieces presented a few difficulties, but after completing these I had figured out the best way to join them.

After completing the pillow shams, I moved onto creating a duvet cover. I did this by making four 45” x 45” squares of patchwork, due to the space constraints of working from home.

For each square, I tried to gradate the size of pieces from small in one corner to large in the opposite corner to create an effect of the quilt blooming out from the center when all pieces were joined together.

I then bought a bedsheet, cut it to size, created a lip with buttons to secure it, sewed the quilt top to the sheet as if it were a pocket, and covered my existing duvet.

This is a series/style I will likely continue, until I’ve either run out of scraps or furniture to cover.

I’ve got a few chairs to create cushions for or reupholster, and I’m sure the scraps will continue to build up until I think of some new way to use them.
